District reclassifies EL data coordinator role to manager to widen candidate pool

The Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 Board of Education approved July 9 the reclassification of the coordinator of EL (English Learner) Student Assessment Data to manager of EL Student Assessment Data. The administration said the position has been vacant for several years and is difficult to fill because candidates often lack the Type 75 administrative license required of coordinators.
District staff told trustees the reclassification reduces supervisory responsibilities in the job description and places supervisory duties under the assistant director, reducing the certification requirement to a bachelor’s degree. The goal, presenters said, is to broaden the pool of qualified applicants who have data expertise and EL experience; the board approved the change on a roll call vote.
Board members asked whether the salary would change; staff said the title change reduced placement on the salary schedule and that, because incumbents were not in the role, no retroactive pay adjustments were necessary. The administration said the change should make it easier to hire a candidate who can both analyze data and speak another language, a skill the district described as important for the role.
