Tumwater names new economic development coordinator; firefighter earns instructor award

The City Administrator gave administrative updates at the July 22 Tumwater City Council work session, announcing a new hire, an award for a firefighter, project information tools and community events.
The city offered its Economic Development Coordinator position to Gene Angel; Angel accepted and will begin Aug. 18, the administrator said. Twenty candidates applied and five were interviewed; the administrator said Angel currently serves as Director of Research and Evaluation at Thurston EDC and brings about 10 years of local economic‑development experience.
The administrator also announced that Firefighter‑EMT Travis Leiva received the "outstanding instructor" award from the South Sound Recruit Academy; the award is voted on by recruits in the class, and Battalion Chief James Osberg was quoted saying Leiva "works very hard at instructing and is passionate about passing down and giving back what he was given as a recruit."
Staff showcased a new way for residents to track the city’s paver project on the city homepage. The interactive page includes a weekly schedule and a GIS map that allows users to click specific locations to see if work is planned, in progress or complete. The administrator said the Tumwater Soccer Club’s 46th annual "Kick in the Grass" tournament used Pioneer Park over the weekend; staff reported 89 teams participated and that 55 games were played at Pioneer Park during the two‑day event.
The city will observe a three‑week summer recess; staff noted some employees will take vacation during the quieter period. No formal council action was taken on the administrative items; these were informational reports.
Councilmembers gave staff thanks for the updates and congratulated Leiva on the award and staff on the hiring.
