Lead testing, security foyer and roof repairs underway at Clinton schools, district says

John Lowe, a district staff member who presented facilities updates at the July 22 meeting, said contractors began lead-based paint testing this week under the Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids program and that work will proceed at Butler Avenue, Sunset Avenue and Sampson Middle School.

Lowe described the recently completed security foyer at Clinton High School. He said the project reconfigured the visitor window and interior desk to allow staff to exchange paperwork securely through a teller drawer and to limit entry into the rest of the building. "I think that's going to be an asset to the high school," he said.

Lowe also reported that a roofing contractor’s foreman had been injured on another site, delaying the roof replacement on a 300 hall; a replacement foreman is expected to complete the work before students return. At Sunset Avenue he said the exterior brick had been removed, metal supports installed and metal panels were scheduled for installation; windows were manufactured and awaited flashing delivery. He said the auditorium canopy would receive a new metal soffit and repositioned lights to waterproof and modernize the front canopy.

Board members discussed possible operational uses for the high-school foyer window during events and confirmed that weapons-detection monitors at the foyer will be staffed during student entry.

No board action was requested; staff said the work is progressing and that they will continue to brief the board as projects near completion.
