The City Council introduced amendments to the code of ordinances to add a 20-foot clearance requirement for open burning near structures or property lines and to broaden the authority for ordinance enforcement by citation officers. Councilor Sebastian Paniota said the open-burning change grew from community input and fire-department recommendations and that the goal is safety.
Paniota said the ordinance language adds a 20-foot buffer next to structures or property lines for open burns. Councilors noted the provision is situational and complaint-driven; Councilor Cheryl Tebow said the measure gives fire personnel a tool to address nuisance burns and to request police assistance and citations when necessary. The council set public hearing dates for August 5 at 4:45 p.m., 4:50 p.m. and 4:55 p.m., respectively, for the proposed amendments to chapters covering fire prevention and ordinance enforcement by citation officers.
Councilors voted to waive the readings and scheduled the ordinance committee hearings; no final ordinance change was adopted at the meeting.
