Park & Rec OKs five-year recreation plan contract, tree inventory and ash-tree disposal policy; ordinance to allow animals at events passes 7-1

The Park and Recreation Committee recommended several items that the council approved on Feb. 11.

The committee recommended entering an agreement with East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (ECWRPC) to prepare a five-year comprehensive outdoor recreation plan. The council approved the recommendation; the ECWRPC will coordinate community involvement and create the plan timeline and responsibilities.

The committee also recommended an agreement with Bluestem Forestry for a city tree inventory; the scope will help populate the city’s GIS for tree planting, trimming and removal records and the cost is partially covered by an urban forestry grant. The council approved the recommendation.

Park and Rec presented an ash tree disposal policy that makes ash wood available to the public through a sealed-bid process in sized lots; the committee and council approved the policy.

On ordinance business, the council approved on second reading an amendment to the City of New London code to permit animals at special events. The motion carried with seven votes in favor and one no vote; Council member Barrington said he still disagreed and particularly objected to allowing dogs at events with fireworks.

Park and Rec staff also reported that the London Aquatic and Fitness Center has received notice that the SilverSneakers insurance reimbursement program will not be continuing, a change the director said will affect approximately 70 memberships. The committee asked staff to continue communications with affected members.
