Parent urges investigation into alleged assault and school response at Rancho Del Rey Middle School

"My daughter was physically assaulted by a classmate and threatened to be raped in 3 different manners. She filed a formal complaint January 29," said Chad Bear, who told trustees he had submitted a six‑page report detailing multiple incidents and alleged procedural failures by school staff during the investigation. Bear said he believes the school’s handling of the complaint may have violated district administrative regulation AR 5145.7 (separation of accuser and accused) and cited California Code of Regulations Title 15 (as referenced in his remarks) protecting students from collective or group punishment.
Bear described repeated instances he said amounted to revictimization — including his daughter being pulled from class to speak with an assistant principal while the alleged attacker remained nearby — and said the family was denied details of a no‑contact order issued to the other student. He also referenced a prior 2023 incident involving his son.
Board members and staff responded that the complaint would be referred to the appropriate district office for follow-up. "Could we refer this matter to you? Mhmm. Thank you," a board member said after the comment period; earlier in open session a trustee asked staff to look into the matter. No formal vote was taken at the meeting on the complaint; the speaker asked the board to investigate and to ensure the district provides details the family needs to enforce protections.
The parent asked the board to investigate staff conduct and said some alleged actions might warrant criminal charges; board members did not comment on that legal assertion but indicated the superintendent’s office and district administration would receive the report for review.
