Sweetwater trustees reopen two student cases, approve employee leave and a classified dismissal

The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees announced on July 21 that it had approved the reinstatement of two students, granted a certificated employee a leave of absence and approved the dismissal of one classified employee following a closed-session meeting.

Trustee Solis moved to approve the reinstatement of two students; Trustee Arancibia seconded. The board recorded votes as "yes" from Arancibia, Emerald, Lopez, Lopez and Solis. Trustee Arancibia moved, and Trustee Lopez seconded, to approve a request for a leave of absence for one certificated employee; the board again recorded the same yes votes. Trustee Lopez moved, and Trustee Arancibia seconded, to approve the dismissal of one classified employee; the board announced that motion as carried. These actions were taken in closed session under Education Code section 48916 through 48918 and Government Code Section 54957, as reported when the board reconvened.

Board President Lopez Zepeda read the district’s closed-session summary aloud after the meeting and identified the statutory authorities used for the deliberations. The items listed in the meeting notice included student expulsions and reinstatements, public-employee discipline and dismissal, anticipated litigation and labor negotiations.

Because the proceedings occurred in closed session, the board provided only the motions and vote tallies on the record when it returned to open session; no further factual details about the individual student cases or personnel matters were reported at that time.

The board approved its regular meeting agenda and the consent calendar later in open session by recorded votes, and several other agenda items were discussed and voted on after the closed session.
