The policy subcommittee on July 22 reviewed draft guidance on staff reimbursement for personal items lost, stolen or damaged at school and debated whether the district should adopt a formal policy or continue to treat requests case-by-case. Staff described recurring situations in which educators request reimbursement for items such as glasses, laptops or phones damaged on school property. The draft guidance presented to members stated that Fall River Public Schools is not responsible for property brought onto school grounds and generally does not reimburse staff, but that reimbursement may be considered in limited circumstances when an item is damaged while an employee is performing a required duty. Several committee members argued the district should discourage staff from bringing high-value personal items to work and not reimburse routine losses. One member said, “Don’t bring personal stuff into your work. We’re not responsible for it.” Another echoed that workers’ compensation should cover medical-device damage incurred during restraint or safety incidents. Other members and some administrators urged caution; they proposed limited reimbursement for medically essential items such as prescription eyeglasses or glucometers when damaged during the performance of job duties and recommended a standard form and receipts to document claims. Members suggested having the district consult legal counsel and collect more data from educators about the frequency and nature of claims before finalizing policy. After discussion the subcommittee voted to table the item to collect teacher and staff feedback, consult counsel, and return with clearer procedures and limits. The motion to table was seconded and recorded in the minutes. The transcript does not show adoption of a final reimbursement policy at this meeting.
