Summary
The local airport manager announced an inaugural air show to mark the airport's 55th anniversary, contracted 11 aerial performers including historic warbirds, a large static display and STEM youth activities; event coordination with FAA, James City County emergency responders and regional partners is complete.
Karen, local manager of Williamsburg Executive Airport, briefed the Board July 22 on an inaugural air show planned for September to celebrate the airport's 55th anniversary and offered the airport as a county contact for questions.
Karen said the air show has contracted 11 aerial performers, including nationally and internationally known aerobatic and formation teams, and noted a special military display pairing a Corsair and a P-51 Mustang. Gates will open at 9 a.m.; organizers expect to close the event around 5 to 6 p.m. and estimate attendance of 4,000 to 5,000 people per day. The on-site footprint includes an approximately 80,000-square-foot static display area and a 'Focus Arrow Adventure Kids Zone' with STEM activities and raffle prizes, and performers will provide media, dignitary and incentive rides.
Karen credited the James City County Fire and Police departments with early incident-response planning that satisfied Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements and said the local Richmond FAA office recommended no changes to the airport's incident-response plan. She listed local partners on the Airshow Planning Committee, including York County, the James City County Economic Development Authority, hotel and motel associations, Visit Williamsburg and Culture Fix, and named Heather Harmon as the committee co-organizer.
Karen said the airport will serve as a liaison to answer community questions and said further event details will be distributed through county contacts and the airport. The presentation was informational; supervisors thanked staff and volunteers for planning and offered to volunteer support.
