City examines integrated streetlight/camera heads to brighten and declutter downtown poles

City staff presented a prototype integrated streetlight head that combines LED lighting, cameras and other sensors as part of a downtown streetlight and camera replacement project. Chris Lagerbloom said the goal is to improve downtown lighting and reduce pole clutter while upgrading camera capability.
Lagerbloom said the fixture integrates cameras and lighting in a single head and that the LED color and brightness can be adjusted by software. "If you tell me that the aesthetic is okay, I will be coming forward with a plan to do a test out here on Main Street," he said. Council members expressed mixed reactions to the prototype’s look; Councilman Mitchell said the unit as presented "is the ugliest streetlight I have ever seen," while others suggested the fixture may present better on poles and asked that the city pursue design options to fit Alpharetta’s historic downtown aesthetic.
Staff said Peachtree Corners and other jurisdictions are using similar heads and that the combined hardware can improve camera clarity and analytics for public safety. Lagerbloom said a limited pilot on Main Street would test lighting, camera performance and public response before any broader deployment.
