Council approves converting an EMT position to a full-time paramedic

The EMS chief (referred to in the meeting as Mr. Carey) said the county currently has two open EMT positions and a part-time paramedic who could move to a full-time role; converting an EMT slot to a paramedic would increase scheduling flexibility and improve field coverage. The chief estimated the annual incremental cost at roughly $9,000, prorated for the current year given the hiring date and budget timing.
The motion to vacate the EMT position and add a paramedic position was made by Anton and seconded by Nick; the council approved the change by voice vote. Council members asked the EMS chief to attempt to cover the incremental cost within the department’s existing budget for the remainder of the year and to report back during budget workshops if additional appropriation is required.
No other personnel changes were approved at the meeting; the council said it would monitor year-end budget balances and consider transfers or supplemental appropriations if necessary.
