One council member said keeping the money in a dedicated “Axon” line or saving supplemental distributions could smooth the payment burden over time.
After discussion the council voted to advertise an amount of up to $40,054 for the first-year payment, contingent on confirming current budget lines and precise figures at the next meeting. The motion to advertise up to $40,054 was made and seconded by council members and approved. Council members asked staff to confirm whether part of the current contract was already budgeted and to present final numbers for an August meeting so the county would not lose coverage when the contract expires on Sept. 14.
The sheriff told the council Axon provides equipment replacement (including new cameras every 2½ years), maintenance and storage; he estimated the contract is the county’s largest non-vehicle recurring contract and said unlimited storage is the most expensive element. The sheriff also said body cameras have repeatedly protected officers from wrongful claims and reduce time spent drafting incident reports by generating drafts.
No price discount was offered for full-payment upfront, the sheriff said. Council members suggested building a dedicated Axon savings line or budgeting incremental contributions to reduce the future cash burden. The council did not approve full five-year prepayment; it approved only advertising a first-year appropriation amount for public notice and further review.
