The City of Elkhart Parks & Recreation Board on July 15 approved a memo from the forestry program authorizing a contract related to tree work.
Board members raised concerns about whether replacement funding for removed trees is secure. One member asked, “So how certain are we that we are getting funding to replace these trees?” and pressed staff about alternatives if expected grant money does not arrive. Another board member asked whether the department has enough internal funds to replace trees if grants fall through. A parks staff member referred to the department’s preplanning budget as a funding source.
Members also noted that photos related to the forestry memo had not been included in the meeting packet; staff agreed to include photos and property addresses in future packets so board members can review them in advance and ask specific questions at the meeting.
A motion to approve the forestry memo/contract was made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote.
