The Elkhart Parks and Recreation Board approved claims totaling $1,026,636.33 at its January meeting. Staff told the board the large total largely reflects encumbrances carried over from 2024 that were invoiced and paid at the start of the new year.
During discussion, staff identified that sizable items included encumbrances for picnic tables and other park amenities, a Zamboni and the park bomb (sic — likely a facility or piece of equipment; exact internal label used by staff). A $100 donation and no grants were reported on the financial summary presented.
"Most of those, the big ones that you see are from encumbrances from the money from 2024. We just tack on and paid it beginning of the year instead of the end of the year," a finance-presenting staff member said. The board moved, seconded and voted to approve the financials unanimously.
No additional budget amendments, grant approvals, or contract awards were recorded during the financials discussion at this meeting; the item recorded was approval of the claims as presented.
