Elkhart parks board approves $150,000 annual purchase program for benches, picnic tables and trash cans

The City of Elkhart Parks & Recreation Board on July 15 approved a memo authorizing the department to proceed with its annual purchase of picnic tables, benches and trash cans from an appropriated budget of $150,000.
The memo, introduced by Jamieson, parks department staff, said the money has been appropriated for the year and staff intends to develop consistent designs so amenities “feel elevated and polished.” Jamieson said a small subcommittee is working on design consistency.
Board members asked what happens to the fixtures that are removed. Jamieson said items with resale value will be processed on a disposal/asset form and auctioned with other city equipment; items with no resale value and that are metal would be scrapped and recycled. A board member asked that photos of proposed replacements be included in future meeting packets so members can review them in advance.
Bill (acting board chair) moved to approve the memo and another board member seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The department indicated it will bring final designs to the board for feedback and will follow the city’s asset disposal procedures for removed fixtures.
Board members and staff said they expect purchases to be staged over the fiscal year rather than all at once.
