Logansport Board fines three properties after repeated violations; weekly code report approved

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety voted to impose fines and authorize cleanups at multiple properties after hearing the code enforcement weekly report. The board approved a $500 fine for 1806 Knowlton Street, a $500 fine for 1617 Smead Street, and an additional $1,000 fine for 1305 North Street, which already had a prior $500 penalty on the record.

Code Enforcement Officer Randy presented the weekly report, saying the department issued 12 new trash notices, cleared or closed 61 properties, has 73 pending cases, issued eight notices to appear and recorded several grass and trash follow‑ups. Randy said some properties had been cleared by owners and detailed the status of pending cases.

On 1806 Knowlton Street, Randy described multiple violations and said the property still had material that needed removal; the board voted to assess a $500 fine and authorize the city to arrange cleanup if necessary. For 1617 Smead Street, Randy said the property had a dumpster and was about 90% cleaned but had not otherwise contacted enforcement; the board voted both to approve cleanup authority and to place a $500 fine.

For 1305 North Street, Randy recounted that the property had been before the board earlier in the year and had a prior $500 fine with a stipulation of no new violations for 12 months; after continued noncompliance the board voted to add an additional $1,000 fine (to be considered on top of the prior $500), and the record notes the owner may appeal the new fine in accordance with the board's procedures.

Board members voted on each motion by roll call. The transcript shows the board discussing tiers of fines and noting the board's desire to avoid repeatedly returning to the same properties. The board also approved the regular weekly code enforcement report during the meeting.
