City Administrator Glenn told the Erlanger City Council on July 1 that the city will purchase road salt for the coming season at $88.03 per ton by piggybacking the county's existing contract, saving roughly $40 per ton compared with bids the city received this year.
Public Works annually solicits separate bids for bulk road salt. At the council meeting, Glenn said four online bids this year ranged from $134 to $149 per ton, while the county contract the city can piggyback has one year remaining and allows purchase at $88.03 per ton.
"So we're, you know, nearly $40 cheaper," City Administrator Glenn said, summarizing the immediate savings the city will realize by using the county contract for the coming season.
Glenn told the council the four online bids received were $134, $135, $146 and $149 per ton and characterized salt pricing as volatile; he said the county contract will cover the upcoming year and the city will re-evaluate next season. There was no council motion recorded in the transcript to approve a separate purchase order at the meeting; the report was presented as the administration’s procurement update.
The change affects the Public Works budget line for road salt purchases; Glenn framed the price difference as a cost-avoidance for the current budget year. He said hope remains that market prices will drop by next winter but cautioned that salt costs "do fluctuate quite a bit."
