The Spokane City Council approved the consent agenda unanimously on July 21, a package that the council said included purchases of police equipment and funding for therapeutic courts. A council member described the police purchases as items such as ballistic helmets, night-vision goggles and vehicles for SWAT and related units, and said recent incidents had shown officers were not always adequately equipped. “I just think there’s some good investments being made in, into police today when it comes to police equipment,” the member said during council commentary.
Another council member praised inclusion of funding for therapeutic courts and DUI enforcement, noting a partnership and grants from the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission to support DUI officers and therapeutic-court work. The consent agenda passed without recorded opposition. The council did not alter the listed consent items during the meeting.
