Expo shelter name sparks confusion; commissioners say they were not notified

A board member said he had attended a meeting with Jim Ward and the Saunders family in which the family discussed building a new shelter and possible locations, but no decision or formal renaming was recorded in that meeting. The board's liaison said the commissioners had not been involved in any renaming and that Commissioner Dowinger, who was watching the meeting, texted that the commissioners knew nothing of the hyphenation.
Expo members said they were unsure whether the change originated with commissioners or elsewhere and that the matter had been a surprise to several parties. The Expo representative said the issue could affect grant applications and planning for a new shelter; the board noted it had previously discussed potential shelter locations and coordination with commissioners but said the commission's contract review and decisions had not been finalized.
No formal action to rename the shelter was recorded at the meeting. Board members asked an Expo representative to follow up with the board president to determine where the hyphenated name originated and to report back to the park board at a future meeting.
