Veterans Museum and park discuss cannon relocation, request resealing and August target date

Representatives of the Veterans Museum and Memorial Park discussed July 22 plans to move a museum cannon onto a prepared area of park pavement and to reseal that area before the cannon is relocated.

A museum representative said the area where the cannon will be placed "could use resealing" and recommended cleaning and resealing before the cannon is set down to ensure a longer-lasting finish. He named a sealer used previously, saying it cost about "$125 per 5 gallons" and described it as high quality. The museum representative said pressure washing and two coats of sealer would be advisable and offered to obtain the same sealer to keep materials consistent.

Park staff and board members discussed timing and manpower. The park suggested buying the sealer and scheduling work; the museum representative offered to help but noted personal scheduling constraints. Board members proposed a target of completing the resealing and relocation by August, provided staff and volunteers can coordinate a date.

No formal vote or contract for moving the cannon was recorded in the meeting. Board members discussed possible help from local veterans or military-service recruiters, and one audience member suggested asking the marine recruiter to help move the cannon. The board and museum agreed to coordinate on procuring sealer, confirming family or volunteer support for moving the cannon, and setting a timeframe.

The discussion included practical concerns about moving the cannon (manpower, risk of rolling into the pond) and a recommendation to reseal the placement area in advance; the museum representative volunteered to buy sealer if the board would schedule staff to perform the work.
