Board members said current practice is inconsistent: some rooms and outdoor facilities carry names tied to individuals, sometimes living people and sometimes historical figures; others were removed or lost when buildings were renovated. Trustees asked staff to gather model policies from other jurisdictions and return with recommendations on who may be honored, whether names may be assigned to living people, how long a name should remain in place, whether plaques should accompany names and what process should govern renaming requests.
Trustees discussed several practical aims: allowing schools to recognize contributors while ensuring a clear community review process; providing a mechanism to remove or reexamine names if new facts emerge about honorees; and prioritizing plaques and historical context so students and community members can learn the reason a name was selected.
The board did not take final action but asked staff to prepare draft policy language, compile examples from other districts and return to a future work session for discussion.
