Council updates: police canine recovering; lakefront bench fundraiser, summer programs and infrastructure work announced

Council members used their reports section at the June 29 meeting to provide community updates on public‑facing programs and village infrastructure.

Councilmember Cochran reported that the village’s police canine suffered serious injuries in an accident, required surgery for a broken jaw and soft‑tissue repair, and is expected to recover; she said a GoFundMe campaign would be launched to help cover emergency veterinary costs. Cochran thanked the officers and citizens who assisted in the canine’s rescue and said the dog “wagged his tail today” as a sign of improving condition.

Council members and staff also highlighted community programs: a Springfield Shares backpack and school supply giveaway was held over the weekend and was described as a success; the Lakemore Lunch Club continues weekday activities with scheduled special guests (a “mad scientist” event, music introduction and a DJ dance party), and the Lakemore Food Pantry will operate a distribution July 30 from 4:30–6 p.m. at Lakeway United Methodist Church. National Night Out is scheduled for Aug. 5, according to announcements.

Parks and infrastructure updates included a lakefront improvement project: benches are being ordered and concrete pads for the pavilion/gazebo and bench pads are being installed. Council announced benches may be purchased for $1,000 each to sponsor a memorial plaque; the long‑term plan calls for about 20 benches along the lakefront. Public works staff reported progress on manhole work and resurfacing on HN Miller, Fairdale, Danforth and Michaels Drive, and that the village has two quotes and is awaiting a third for a water‑main replacement on Springfield Lake Drive; a funded water‑main replacement project on Second Street will proceed to bid opening in the coming weeks.
