Members said the current volunteer package of a $10 cash payment plus a heavy T-shirt did not adequately compensate or protect volunteers from heat-related strain.
Commissioners described volunteers struggling with heavy cotton shirts during high temperatures, with some requesting breaks or removing sleeves. Several members recommended raising the cash payment to a more meaningful amount (figures discussed ranged up to $20'$25 in informal comments) and replacing heavy shirts with lighter, reusable identification such as patriotic lanyards that volunteers could wear over their own clothing.
The commission also discussed reserving a small run of special commemorative shirts for the city's 250th anniversary in 2026, either sold to the public or provided in limited numbers, while shifting routine volunteer identification to lower-cost, reusable items. Staff said they would collect exact inventory counts of shirts remaining from the current year (230 ordered this year, with fewer left than previous years) and research lanyard suppliers and wholesale options for future procurement.
