District operations staff reported that nutrition services served about 185,000 meals this year and have submitted CEP applications; a summer Chromebook take‑home program launched; transportation completed over 380 trips and drove about 298,732 miles; facilities briefed the board on seismic reinforcement work and recent roof leaks in the new gym.
Director of Operations John Simpson and department leads updated the board on nutrition, technology, transportation and facilities work at the June 11 meeting.
Nutrition: Lori Dyson reported the district submitted Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) applications to the Oregon Department of Education; if approved, all students would receive free breakfast and lunch without individual meal applications. Simpson said kitchen staff served about 185,000 meals districtwide this school year and that a wellness policy assessment is underway and expected to be complete by June 20.
Technology: The district launched a summer Chromebook take‑home system with digital agreements to keep students connected over the break. Simpson said staff will report how many families opt into the program by the end of the week. The district is piloting upgraded Vocera smart badges (donated by vendor as an upgraded model) with administrative staff to test messaging and safety features.
Transportation: Staff reported completing more than 380 trips this year, supporting more than 45 academic and athletic programs; the transportation fleet logged about 298,732 miles. The district added three new multipurpose vehicles to assist with smaller trips and to allow drivers with Type 10 credentials to support routing flexibility.
Facilities and seismic work: The district’s seismic rehabilitation project remains on schedule, Simpson said; work focuses on reinforcing roof and floor systems and strengthening east and west walls. Simpson reported that during recent work and a June 4 rainstorm, roofers failed to tarp a new gym section adequately, producing three leaks that affected corners of the new gym floor. Contractors accepted responsibility and agreed to repair the damage, Simpson said. During seismic work staff discovered electrical issues in the gym; a local electrical contractor (M2 Electrical) volunteered time to evaluate issues and provide cost‑aware options. Simpson thanked facilities staff for their work addressing these items.
Board members asked for clarification on technical work (Simpson confirmed crews will use shotcrete and rebar reinforcement on east and west walls as part of the reinforcement sequence) and requested follow up on Chromebook participation counts and CET timing. Simpson said the district will provide numbers and additional progress updates as the projects continue.
