The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission approved a reduced gravel parking pad at 1208 South Lawrence Street on Oct. 5, limiting the feature to 12 by 40 feet and recommending landscaping to soften the pad.
The applicant described an existing narrow driveway that becomes too tight to open vehicle doors near the house and said the intention is to create a functional hardscape area near the rear for limited parking and to retain usable backyard space. The applicant added they plan to install a gate so no vehicle can drive beyond the house because a gas line runs near the existing concrete runners.
Staff and the urban forester discussed planting constraints because of limited space and existing canopy; staff recommended shrinking the originally proposed 30‑by‑40 pad to a narrower footprint. The applicant agreed to coordinate with the urban forester and to soften the hardscape with planted containers or limited understory trees where feasible.
The commission moved and seconded a motion to approve the pad with the amended size of 12 by 40 feet; the motion passed. Commissioners also advised the applicant to formalize a gate plan and to coordinate HVAC and access needs with neighbors as necessary.
