The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission voted Oct. 5 to approve existing recessed exterior lighting at 353 Cloverdale Road after staff confirmed the fixtures were installed by a prior owner and nearby neighbors offered written support.
Applicant Drew Zimmerman said the fixtures were present in the home’s listing when he and his wife purchased the property in May and that the lights provide a soft glow and a feeling of safety for the family’s young children. “They have a nice soft glow,” Zimmerman said.
Commission staff said the change came to the office as an unapproved alteration and was cited as a violation; the current owner then contacted staff and explained the fixtures were in place before they purchased the property. Neighbors spoke in favor: a resident who lives next door said, “It’s one color… it’s a nice color,” and another neighbor said the family uses the yard frequently and supported the lighting.
Staff told the commission that the city is drafting updated design guidelines that will address outdoor lighting with more specificity than the current guidelines. The commission moved and seconded a motion to approve the existing lighting; the motion passed.
