Board approves consent agenda and employment recommendations after debate over coach feedback process
Summary
The ISD 194 board approved its consent agenda July 22 with the exception of item 4B brought out for discussion; trustees approved the employment recommendations (item 4B) despite Director Brian Thompson’s proposal for a district‑wide structured feedback process for coaches, which failed for lack of a second.

The ISD 194 school board approved its consent agenda on July 22 after pulling item 4B (employment recommendations, leaves and resignations) for separate discussion. Director Brian Thompson asked that the board consider a district‑wide formal process for collecting and reviewing structured feedback from student participants and parents for all district‑sponsored co‑curricular activities and coaches.
Thompson said parents commonly invest hundreds of dollars in fees and boosters, but the district lacks a consistent mechanism to gather participant and parent feedback across programs, and he proposed a motion requiring administration to establish a formal feedback process so the board could use the data for coach retention, reassignment or removal decisions. "I am making a motion that we establish a formal process for collecting and reviewing structured feedback from both student participants and their parents for all district sponsored activities," Thompson said. The motion failed for lack of a second.
After discussion about capacity and whether the proposal needed more administrative input, the board moved to approve item 4B (employment recommendations, leave requests and resignations). The motion to approve 4B was made by Director Brett Nicholson and seconded by Director Paul Carbone; the board approved the item with one recorded nay (Director Brian Thompson).
The board’s action left the district’s current hiring and assignment recommendations intact but preserved trustees’ ability to raise the issue again; Thompson indicated he would ask administration to return with options and models other districts use and that he would like to see a future report about a standard feedback mechanism for coaches and advisors.
