Board schedules Aug. 26 public hearing on 2025–26 student code of conduct after staff error

The Marion County School Board scheduled a public hearing for Aug. 26, 2025, on the 2025–26 student code of conduct after staff acknowledged an error that required the item to be added to the July 22 agenda for discussion and scheduling.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer said the item was placed on the agenda because “this was an error on our staff's part.” Dr. John Curley, who addressed the board, said staff had communicated with principals about how the district will handle acknowledgements and other timeline issues as the district completes required rulemaking.
Board Member Dr. Allison Campbell said she made the motion to schedule the hearing because the rulemaking step is required even though she expressed disappointment in how the situation occurred. “We really don't have a choice in the matter,” she said, noting the hearing is part of the policy process.
Board members discussed the potential gray area for incidents that could occur in the first weeks of school before the code is formally adopted and asked staff to work to mitigate any enforcement ambiguities. After discussion, the board voted 5-0 to schedule the public hearing.
Staff said principals have been informed about how the district will handle acknowledgements and related process items until the code is adopted.
