School board approves Renaissance Learning agreement for STAR reading assessments, $124,948 purchase

The Marion County School Board voted 5-0 July 22 to approve a special data-share agreement with Renaissance Learning, enabling the district to purchase the STAR Reading assessment and STAR curriculum-based measures (CBMs).
Deborah Bridal, director of elementary curriculum, told the board the STAR Reading assessment helps teachers gauge student readiness for reading and the CBMs enable progress monitoring during the year. “STAR curriculum based measures will allow us to progress monitor students throughout the year, allowing teachers to provide targeted instruction based on learners’ specific needs,” she said.
Ms. Bridal said the purchases approved total $124,948.35. She added that $325,051.65 remained available for schools that wish to purchase optional Renaissance products such as Accelerated Reader, Nearpod or Flocabulary.
Board members asked no questions and approved the agreement by voice vote. The district will use STAR results to inform instruction and identify students needing additional literacy support, staff said.
No opposing comments were recorded. The agreement includes provisions for data sharing with the vendor tied to administration of the assessments and must comply with district policies on student data.
