School board approves $1.2M flooring contract; debate centers on $800,000 Dunnellon High allocation

The Marion County School Board voted 5-0 July 22 to renew bid 4009GM for carpet and vinyl flooring supply and installation, a contract totaling $1,200,000 for the coming year.
Board members and staff discussed an estimated $800,000 allocation in the contract intended for Dunnellon High School. Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer said the district’s prioritization lists place Dunnellon next for flooring work; maintenance staff provided criteria of age, use and condition. “Based on his criteria, age, use, condition, he has done several other high schools already. This one was next in line,” Dr. Brewer said.
Board Member Dr. Sarah James urged caution, questioning whether spending $800,000 on flooring made sense if the building might require extensive renovation or replacement in the next four to five years. “To put that much money into a facility that we may very well have to essentially pull it up seems very fiscally irresponsible in my opinion,” she said, and indicated she would vote no absent further information. The motion passed 5-0.
Others argued for moving forward. Board member Miss Usher noted Dunnellon High’s reported enrollment at about 140% capacity and said heavy foot traffic increases wear on flooring. “I don’t know that I could feasibly say, you’re not allowed to get new flooring for the next 7 years,” she said. Several members requested a feasibility study to determine whether repairs or replacement would be more cost-effective.
Staff said the district typically budgets $1.2 million annually for flooring and that the contract includes materials for multiple campuses. The contract term runs one year through July 2026, and the Nellon (Dunnellon) High School floor estimate of $800,000 was included in the bid total.
The board approved the contract renewal and directed staff to provide additional feasibility information and prioritization details for Dunnellon High and other projects.
No structural renovation decision was made; the vote authorized the flooring contract as presented.
