County to close two rural roads for week-long culvert replacements; paving work continues on county routes

County road staff told commissioners two low-capacity culverts in the southeast corner of the county will be closed to through traffic for about a week while crews install four-sided concrete box structures and improve foundations.
The staff member reporting said the two culverts (Culvert 260 on 7 South between 6 and 700 East, and Culvert C350 on 1100 South between 6 and 7 East) are posted for weight because foundation erosion has exposed spread footings; both structures are roughly 60'70 years old. The replacements will include solid bottoms set about two feet lower than the current invert to build in future capacity; crews will use cranes to set boxes with one set expected Friday and the other Monday, weather permitting. Local access around barricades will be maintained, but through traffic will be detoured.
Staff also reported that KBL (Mark Lafever) performed asphalt approach repairs and chip-seal approach work on five bridges, with additional asphalt used where ride and joint conditions warranted it. The presenter said that work was completed and the contractor had expanded the paved area slightly to improve ride quality.
On County Road 700 South (from 150 to 27), contractors have scheduled concrete curb pours and paving; crews had identified soft areas during proof-rolling, dug out 6 to 12 inches of poor subgrade and installed a reinforcement geogrid prior to paving. Staff said Fleming (contractor) and subcontractors are on schedule and that the town of Berne will take ownership of a half-mile segment once construction is complete. The project will be coordinated with the local school system to minimize disruption around the start of school.
Commissioners discussed a narrow local bridge in the county-wide list and staff said geometry alone does not require replacement unless the structural condition is poor; narrow but sound bridges may be deferred in favor of those with worse condition. Chip-seal season continues with 65 miles completed to date and a target of 100 miles for the year.
Taper: staff said they will notify schools and local residents about the culvert closures and maintain communication with commissioners as paving and bridge work progress.
