Morton amends mailbox inspection rules, raises reimbursement cap to $200

The Village of Morton Board of Trustees on July 21 adopted Ordinance 26-05, amending Morton Municipal Code section 8-1-5 to create a consistent inspection process for mailboxes and to change the village reimbursement policy for mailboxes damaged by snow plows.
The Director of Public Works described an eight-point inspection process that staff will follow and said inspections and photographs will be uploaded into the village GIS. Residents whose mailboxes are judged “unsatisfactory” after certified notice would not be eligible for reimbursement or for village labor to repair or replace the mailbox. The reimbursement cap for mailboxes that are maintained in satisfactory condition will increase from $150 to $200 and would be available with receipts.
The director said inspections would use still photographs taken by staff and would be designed to be straightforward rather than labor intensive. Trustees asked procedural questions about whether staff would use photos or video; the director said photos would be taken as part of routine inspections. The motion to adopt the ordinance was moved, seconded and passed by roll call.
