Public services committee to propose code changes targeting derelict vehicles and camping sites

During the July 22 meeting the Yelm City Council’s public services committee reported it is preparing possible code amendments to improve the city’s ability to address nuisance properties, including clusters of campers, derelict or inoperable vehicles and related property conditions.
A council member reporting out of the public services committee said the group discussed language to give the city stronger enforcement options for property cleanup in cases where current code is insufficient to address multiple campers, derelict cars and similar conditions. “They’re gonna look into language that, you know, we might make some codes where they can't enforce some of that cleanup property cleanup type items,” the committee report stated.
Committee members characterized the work as drafting language to bring back to council rather than enacting immediate changes; the report included updates on local development activity but did not present a proposed ordinance or ask for a vote. The council did not take formal action on code changes at the July 22 meeting.
Staff and committee members indicated the process will include more discussion and that future agenda items will present draft wording and enforcement options for council consideration.
