The Anderson City Common Council advanced Ordinance 14-25 on June 12 to assign I-1 (light industrial) zoning to roughly 4.81 acres annexed into the city behind the Unified Group Services building at 3131 E 60th Street.

City planning staff told the council the parcels were annexed on May 8 and must be assigned a city zone class before development can proceed. Tim Stein (city planning staff) said the land is currently farm ground and that the petitioner, Double M Properties LLC, seeks the I-1 zone to match the adjoining Unified property. Staff recommended I-1 because the parcels adjoin an existing light-industrial use and would be suitable for expansion and parking.

At the hearing, Mike Austin, attorney for the petitioner, said the added land would be used primarily for parking to support an expansion of Unified Group Services. Andrew Eller, CFO of Unified Group Services, said the company currently employs about 190 people and is "looking to add another 110 employees." The planning commission had voted unanimously in favor of the rezoning, and the council recorded unanimous votes to advance the ordinance through its first and second readings.

No third-reading vote was recorded in the meeting; staff and the petitioner said the zoning would allow the employer to add parking in support of planned growth. The council did not record any amendments or public opposition during the readings.
