District announces start dates, back-to-school bash and new hires; band director praised for parent engagement

Superintendent Dr. Reynolds told the Garfield Heights City School District Board of Education on July 21 that the district’s first day for grades 1–12 will be Friday, Aug. 22; kindergarten will use a split schedule with last names A–K attending Aug. 28 and L–Z attending Aug. 29.
The district’s annual back-to-school community event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Garfield Heights High School, 4900 Journey Road, where the district will offer supply giveaways, games and staff meet-and-greet opportunities.
Dr. Reynolds also announced personnel additions. He congratulated Brett Dawson, who will serve as Garfield Heights High School band director, and described Dawson as having grown the middle-school program and being highly engaged with parents. A board member who has an eighth-grade band student praised Dawson’s parent communication and said that engagement contributed to the program’s rapid growth.
Staff also noted a new assistant principal at the high school, a former special-education teacher, and a newly hired agriculture-science teacher. The district’s athletic director obtained 100 free mouthguards via a Delta Dental program for scholar-athletes, staff said.
Superintendent and board members encouraged families to mark the calendar for the Aug. 16 event and the August school start dates and emphasized continued emphasis on literacy and family engagement during the coming year.
