Board approves open-enrollment policy; district outlines outreach and registration improvements

The Garfield Heights City School District Board of Education on July 21 approved waiving additional readings of a proposed open-enrollment policy designed to manage fluctuating enrollment and encourage students to enroll as active participants in district programs.
Board members said the policy aims to encourage applicants who will participate in programs such as agricultural science, band and athletics, rather than to "open the floodgates" to transient enrollment without program engagement.
During discussion, district staff described procedural changes intended to prevent last year’s registration problems. A staff member on the data team said processes are now documented in writing across departments, new training has been provided and the district has already begun updating its website. The district also said it is developing a mobile app to make information and sign-ups easier for families and that principals will be able to post event information from the field.
The board voted by roll call to waive further readings of the open-enrollment policy. Members voting "yes" included Miss Cox, Miss Morrison, Missus Daniels and Dr. King.
Staff committed to providing a documented timeline and to communicating registration procedures and outreach plans to the community in the coming weeks.
