Norwalk authority approves Sonal Half Marathon route; organizer says course unchanged

The Norwalk Traffic Authority on July 21 approved the route and traffic plan for the Sonal Half Marathon, which the organizer said will use the same course it has since 2023 and will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the first Sunday in October.
Event organizer Mr. Whipple told the authority this will be the 11th year of the race and said he met with Officer Eberts and the police department earlier in the summer. He said the course will remain the same, organizers use a course marshal and time limits, and they plan multiple coordination meetings with the Department of Public Works, police and the state Department of Transportation in August and September.
A Police Department representative said the department had received no complaints about the event. Commissioners asked about coordination with construction and closures; Whipple said the packet lists expected delays and that the organizer will coordinate timing with known construction, advance signage and outreach. The authority voted unanimously to approve the item.
The organizer said the event uses a course marshal that follows the final runners, a time limit for completion and that the races have not produced major issues in recent years. The authority did not add additional conditions to the approval at the meeting.
Further meetings between the organizer, police department and DPW are planned in August and September to finalize details ahead of the October race.
