San Angelo ISD presented a district academic update to trustees on Aug. 4 that included spring 2025 STAR achievement results, early‑grade fluency gains and the district’s plan to sustain growth through aligned instructional materials and professional learning. Administrators emphasized the distinction between state achievement measures and growth metrics, noting the state’s accountability ratings were delayed and that growth data would be released later. The presentation showed mixed year‑to‑year changes across grades and subjects: several elementary grades showed increases in percentages meeting approaches/standards, while some secondary end‑of‑course measures (English I, English II, Algebra I) reflected declines or flat results. District leaders said the rollout of new, aligned instructional materials since 2023 and targeted coaching for teachers had contributed to gains in several cohorts. District staff highlighted kindergarten through second‑grade screening results showing a decline in the share of kindergartners classified as “well below” from 53% at entry to 31% at the end of year, and similar improvements in first and second grades. The presentation included data from Reflex Math showing shifts in students’ math fluency bands from beginning to end of year. Administration described required professional learning with Region 15, informal walkthroughs for bite‑size coaching, and a quarter‑by‑quarter evidence review process for principals. Trustees asked about cohort differences, effects of COVID‑era learning gaps, algebra teacher turnover and how the district sets measurable goals. Leaders said growth goals will be reflected in superintendent and board goals and that staff will provide campus breakdowns and more detailed data in upcoming Friday communications and board briefings.
