Park board adopts pickleball plan, names Maggie Sparks Promenade; Lake Fest set for this weekend

The La Porte Park Board and the City Council provided updates on parks projects and the upcoming Lake Fest during the July 21 meeting.
Councilwoman Ficus reported the Park Board adopted a pickleball master plan and that Mary Ann Richards has been working on a grant for a lift at the Civic Auditorium; staff expects funding by Nov. 1 so the project can go out for bid. The board also approved extended park hours and limited operation of utility vehicles on grass for several events, and it signed a memorandum of understanding related to the Evans statue installed in Fox Park on July 16. By unanimous vote the Park Board named the lower walkway at Unity Park the Maggie Sparks Promenade in honor of Maggie Sparks, who will retire as president and CEO of the Unity Park Foundation at the end of the year.
Council staff and event organizers outlined this weekend's Lake Fest activities, which include steamboat rides on Pine Lake, a trail scavenger hunt, a 5K run/walk, craft markets, concerts and fireworks. Organizers said Lake Fest is funded by sponsors and earned revenues, not tax dollars, and asked for volunteer support; they provided a parks office contact for volunteers and noted several new attractions including a Beach and Brews event at Stone Lake and steamboat excursions.
Council members encouraged attendance and thanked the Lake Fest committee and sponsors. Organizers said the event is designed to offer family-friendly activities and promote the parks and lakes.
