Hunt County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to authorize staff and the county’s architect to prepare bid packages and solicit contractors for renovations to the Mary Pudin Hill building.
Commissioners said they now have sufficient budget information to move from planning to the bidding phase. County officials told the court the architect’s estimate for the full renovation was about $13.3 million, a figure the court said it would seek to validate through competitive bids. Officials also noted that some of the work is expected to be funded by ARPA monies that must be obligated by the end of 2026.
One commissioner reiterated past opposition to the overall project but said he would support soliciting bids so the court can see firm cost proposals. “I still don’t think it was a great idea to go down this route,” the commissioner said, adding that the court should obtain bids to determine what can be completed within available funds.
The court voted to go to bid and directed staff to prepare bid documents; officials said the bidding process would take time and the court is not obligated to award any contract if responses are not acceptable.
County staff said GrantWorks (the architect) and purchasing would need approximately 30 days to assemble bid documents and the county would evaluate returned proposals and present recommended awards or rejections at a later meeting.
