The La Porte Common Council on July 21 voted to vacate two adjacent alley segments near 416 J Street to accommodate a proposed Taco John's restaurant. The ordinance was read for the second and final time and council members approved the alley vacation after staff and the project representative said the alley served only the Taco John's property and an adjacent credit union and produced no negative impacts for surrounding owners.
Matthew Kirkwood of Dan Charters and Associates explained the request on behalf of the property owner. He said the two alleys are about 11 feet wide, effectively end within the property and do not provide access to other parcels. Craig Phillips, Community Development and Planning Director, told the council the alley does not serve other properties and that planning staff supported the vacation.
Council members moved, seconded and voted in favor; the motion passed. With the vacation approved, the applicant indicated it could proceed with site work and development steps tied to the Taco John's project.
The ordinance vacating the alley is effective following the council's approval and any required filing/publication.
