The Oakley City Council voted to increase pay for summer help in Streets and Parks and to raise pool staff wages, and it agreed to adopt a detailed pool attire sign.
Council approved a motion to set starting pay for untrained summer help in the streets and parks departments at $16 per hour, with annual step increases if they return in subsequent years. Steve made the motion and Russ seconded; the council voted unanimously.
The council also approved a motion to increase pool pay: office staff starting at $9.75 per hour, lifeguards starting at $12 per hour, and pool managers starting at $16 per hour. The motion (moved by Russ, seconded by Lisa) passed unanimously. The council discussed paying for lifeguard training and agreed staff should explore paying or subsidizing certification, but no formal policy change on training costs was adopted at the meeting.
On pool attire, staff presented two sign options. Council members reached consensus to adopt the more detailed sign that lists acceptable and unacceptable swimwear and permits colored cotton T-shirts but not white shirts that become see-through when wet. Councilmember Russ said the municipality should “cover ourselves,” and the group asked staff to produce laminated signs for use at the pool.
Councilmembers said the pay changes intend to improve hiring and retention for seasonal positions and to align local wages with neighboring communities.
