The Wausau Common Council economic development committee, meeting jointly with the finance committee on July 22, voted to move into closed session to deliberate property purchases at three addresses and to discuss bargaining strategy.
Alder Henke moved the closed-session motion citing Wis. Stat. §19.85(1)(e), the statutory exemption for negotiating public-property purchases. Henke’s motion specified the properties at 201 North First Avenue and 901 and 1021 Cherry Street in Wausau. Alder Tierney seconded the motion. The finance committee conducted a roll-call vote and the motion carried.
Why it matters: The committee invoked the competitive-negotiation exemption to the Wisconsin Open Meetings law to allow private deliberation of acquisition strategy and bargaining positions. No substantive details of the property acquisitions were discussed in open session; the committees stated they would return to open session if there were any business to report.
Record and procedure: The committee recorded the statutory citation on the motion and completed the roll call prior to adjourning to closed session.
