Committee authorizes continued acceptance of Wisconsin Lead Safe Homes (LSHP) funds for lead abatement

The Wausau Common Council finance committee on July 22 authorized ongoing acceptance of Lead Safe Homes Program (LSHP) funds from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to continue lead-abatement work in housing units.
City staff said the program has provided funds since 2019 and that the city has used LSHP awards to abate lead-based paint hazards in 22 housing units, with four more units in the pipeline. “We have 4 in the pipeline. We've already used up all of our funds for this year,” a staff member told the committee, adding that the city expects a similar award in the next grant cycle though the exact amount has not yet been announced.
Why it matters: Continued LSHP funding supports lead hazard remediation in rental and owner-occupied housing, which can directly affect child health and housing safety in the community.
Committee action and procedure: Alder Tierney moved to authorize continuous acceptance of LSHP funds through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services; Alder McElhinney seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Follow-up: Staff will accept and deploy future LSHP awards as they are announced; the committee noted the program’s positive impact and the need to track incoming award amounts.
