Commission approves mural panels for Civic Theatre alley using Indiana Arts Commission grant

The Planning Commission approved a two-panel mural for the Civic Theatre alley on July 22, to be produced on removable panels and funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission. Mac Porter explained the artist selection process and displayed concepts that depict a theatrical audience and stage theme; the chosen artist is based in Franklin and has regional ties. Porter said the panels will be attached to the building rather than painted directly on brick to preserve the masonry and allow removal or repainting in the future. Porter told commissioners the project had received state arts commission funding and that the artist submitted two panels to straddle an alley downspout; he said the alley will be pedestrian only and that lighting will be reinstated to illuminate the mural. Commissioners approved the mural concepts and the use of grant funds for the work.
