Summary
The commission’s Community Advisory Committee said it has centralized cultural work, launched a GoGo summer series and registered about 8,000 individual engagement activities as part of expanded outreach across wards.
Cecily Habimana, chair of the commission’s Community Advisory Committee, and Grace Allen, the commission’s cultural architect and people relations specialist, reported on July 21 that the new committee has focused on expanding engagement across historically underrepresented wards and centralizing culture work.
Habimana said the committee will promote cross‑cultural understanding and expand arts and humanities work across all wards. Allen described outreach activities completed since the committee’s establishment, including staff one‑on‑ones, a community‑centered all‑staff training, panelist and moderator training to reduce bias, and partnerships with other DC agencies to promote grants and recruit panelists.
Allen said the commission’s community events produced more than 8,000 individual engagement activities and that the GoGo Summer series drew broad participation, including live broadcasts and visits from government officials. She said the commission launched a demographic survey and provided training and resources to potential applicants and panelists to improve accessibility and diversify reviewer pools.
Habimana and Allen invited commissioners and community members to attend committee meetings and said the committee will continue to centralize cultural work within the agency to better support underserved neighborhoods. No formal commission action was taken during the report.
