Commission lowers speed limit on Southeast 80th corridor after staff speed studies

The Traffic and Transportation Commission on July 21 approved a staff recommendation to establish a consistent 45 mph speed limit along a 3.9-mile corridor of Southeast 80th Street between points west of Eastern Avenue and east of Sooner Road.
Traffic Services Division staff told the commission that a citizen petition requested a reduction on a one-mile segment between Sunny Lane and Bryant Avenue. When staff reviewed adjacent segments they decided the entire urbanizing corridor should be evaluated to set a consistent limit. Using both a standardized field method and a National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) procedure, staff reported an engineering indication of 43–45 mph; the department proposed a 45 mph posted limit.
Commissioner Hale moved approval of the combined three-part item (5B-1, -2 and -3); Commissioner Wynne seconded. The motion passed 7-0.
Staff said the review used current data from the department’s field counts plus analytics from third-party travel-data software and that the city performs roughly 800 traffic counts annually on a rotating basis. The commission also heard that the most recent speed‑cushion installation in the area occurred in mid‑June.
The commission’s action sets the posted speed limits administratively; staff said they will continue to monitor conditions and answer follow-up inquiries.
