The Board of Public Works authorized staff July 9 to solicit quotes for removal of 53 public trees on four streets between Indiana and Lusher as part of preparation for planned sidewalk replacement and street reconstruction.
Chip (public works) said two of the streets (Francis and Stevens) will be fully rebuilt next year and that crews prefer to remove trees now to avoid damaging new pavement. The board asked whether the city intends to replant; a board member noted that the area is within the target area of the city's tree grant and staff said they expect to reforest much of the area using grant funds.
The work was described as a sizable but geographically limited contract covering the area from Morehouse to Prairie between Indiana and Lusher. The board approved the solicitation by voice vote.
