Officials hold flood-response training as levee projects near completion

Gary told commissioners both levee projects are "coming out" and are under budget. He said access control and fencing will be installed to prevent public access where property agreements prohibit trails. "We're going to close those off," he said of the north levee area and said signage will be posted explaining restricted access.
Staff described a coordinated monitoring and alert system tied to a gauge at Bluebump Bridge at Centerton. A 9 a.m. training at the Fire Department Training Center will walk responders through escalation steps: initial monitoring and notification, a second-stage alert, and a third stage that requires physical actions, including a railroad closure near the levee because the railway grade sits about four feet below the levee top.
Commissioners were told other associated projects, such as a parking lot at Wayne and Morgan, have been paved and are ready to be striped. Staff said audio, video and internet systems for some facilities will be installed over a roughly six-week period once procurement is complete.
No formal policy change was adopted; the meeting gave staff direction to proceed with the final installations and to coordinate multi-agency response training.
