City staff reported the Blue Cross low-pressure sewer project closed about $200,000 under the $900,000 budgeted amount and that the city will furnish grinder pumps for properties connecting to the system.
Gary, a city staff member speaking about utilities work, said the project finished under budget: "We closed that one up. We're $200,000 under the $900,000 we had set aside for it." He also said the system is a low-pressure design and that homeowner connections require grinder pumps. "The city is going to furnish those grinder pumps. We don't do any plumbing, but we'll furnish to the plumber if they sign up for a Bionic Sewer system," Gary said.
Commissioners asked about the number of hookups. Gary said, "We've probably got, 7 hooked on now." Commissioners noted the street department (the largest user) remains to be connected, and staff said having steady flow improves system performance.
Regarding cost, Gary said grinder pumps cost about $5 each in the discussion but the transcript suggests he and others were clarifying the amount; staff also noted the $200,000 savings makes sense given the small number of hookups remaining. Commissioners did not adopt new policy at the meeting; staff reported status and next steps for installation.
Less critical details: staff said other sewer and levee projects discussed on the agenda are also under budget and moving to completion this month.
